Thank you so much for taking the
Food & Metaphor Quiz

You have just taken the first step towards solving the mystery of your struggle with eating.

Please note: This quiz is designed to help you find the symbolic meaning behind the foods you crave or fear. It is meant to be used to guide you to think about these topics. It is not intended to diagnose or treat any health condition, and is not a substitute for professional medical advice.

I am Dr. Anita Johnston, author of Eating in the Light of the Moon, and I have been working in the field of disordered eating for over thirty-five years. And what I have discovered is that the very foods we struggle with can reveal hidden hungers that we have been attempting to satisfy with food behaviors.

When we binge on certain food, that is usually not the only thing happening in our lives. When you feel the urge to eat those foods in the absence of physical hunger (or continue to eat those foods after you are already full) there is a good chance those feelings are trying to come into your awareness.

Your quiz results show:

Your quiz results showed tendency to choose hearty, savory, substantial foods, indicating that if you eat these foods when you are not physically hungry, indicating a possible lack of “fulfillment” in certain areas of your life. When you feel the urge to eat those foods in the absence of physical hunger (or continue to eat those foods after you are already full) there is a good chance those feelings are trying to come into your awareness.

Think about the way we use the word substantial to describe relationships that have depth, or experiences that have a lot of dimensions. When we talk about something being full-filling we are saying that it is meaningful and enriching our lives in so many ways. There is a sense of satisfaction and contentment that comes with feeling fulfilled.

These are some metaphoric categories to get you started. Of course, we are all different and what one food means to someone could mean something else to someone else. Your preferences, however, reveal a general tendency to struggle with experiencing too much stimulation, change, and conflict.

Sometimes the symbolism of the food is connected to memories associated with it and might indicate a longing for some past experience. Forbidden foods can speak to us metaphorically about things, feelings, or experiences that feel forbidden. Other times the actual names of the foods carry meaning that might be significant to you.  The ways and situations in which you might typically eat the food can also be symbolic.

The questions to ask yourself to find the deeper meaning are:

  • Where do I experience scarcity in my life?
  • In what way is my work, or my relationships not very fulfilling?
  • What in my life seems too superficial to me?
  • Where do I need more substance and connection?
  • What in my life is not very satisfying?

These are questions that can point you towards the real hungers you are experiencing.

Now that you have some idea of what might be driving your disordered eating, what can you do about it? How can you put this information to good use in your life?

What we’ve covered here is a good start, but it’s just the beginning. I have so much more to share with you. A lot of it is covered in my Cracking the Hunger Code self-study course and in conversations we have in The New Crescent Moon interactive course at the Light of the Moon Café.

“Your guidance has enabled me to put a full stop to my search for the meaning of my eating and weight. I greatly value the clarity of understanding I now have. I do still have to work at being conscious of my feelings and the metaphors in my own life experience and my foods. You have given me great processes and tools for achieving the clarity I was looking for. Thank you”.

You’ll discover how the answers to these questions are hidden in the very foods you crave or fear. But they’re coded! And you have to crack the code.

In this course, I’ll show you how. (It’s easier than you think)

You’ll find the hidden reasons you eat when you’re not hungry, keep on eating when you’re full, or won’t let yourself eat when you are hungry.

“Anita is so inspiring and so passionate about her work and has so much compassion with everyone she works with and meets. Being able to hear Anita crack the food code with metaphors is so amazing.... she is so spot on with defining what you are truly craving for in your life. It is so cool to find out that the food I was either restricting or craving had to do with things in my life now or in my childhood that I wanted and/or needed but didn't get”.
