When I first wrote Eating in the Light of the Moon, I wasn’t sure how it would be received. After all, it wasn’t a traditional psychology book. It was filled with stories, metaphors, and myths from around the world—because that’s how I’ve always made sense of things.

But the response surprised me. Women from all walks of life, not just those with eating disorders, connected with the message. And during a recent interview, I was reminded why this work continues to resonate.

Let’s talk about why.

The Log in the River

One of the metaphors I shared during the interview was about a log in a river. Imagine you’re caught in a raging current, struggling to stay afloat. Then a log comes along. You grab hold. It saves you.

But later, when the water calms, you see the riverbank and realize you want to get there. Only now, the very thing that saved your life—the log—is keeping you from moving forward.

This is what I see so often in the women I work with. Disordered eating may have once served a purpose. It might have helped them cope, feel safe, or gain some sense of control. But over time, it begins to hold them back. And still, they can’t just let go of it. Not because they’re weak, but because they’re wise. Their inner knowing won’t let them release something until they’re ready.

So we practice. Letting go a little. Floating. Treading water. Coming back to the log when needed. And eventually, with time and support, finding the strength to swim to shore.

Two Tanks, Two Hungers

Another way I help women understand their relationship with food is through the metaphor of two tanks.

Tank A is for physical hunger. You fill it with food.

Tank B is for emotional or spiritual hunger—attention, affection, appreciation, connection, rest.

But most of us don’t realize we have two tanks. So we try to fill both with food. And it doesn’t work. Either Tank A is overflowing, and we’re still hungry. Or we avoid food altogether because it feels like a bottomless pit.

That’s when it helps to pause and ask, What am I really hungry for?

Craving sweets might point to a need for more sweetness in life. Salty, crunchy foods often relate to unexpressed anger. Warm foods like soups and stews may reflect a craving for emotional warmth. Even chocolate can be a symbol of love or sensuality.

The key is to get curious—not judgmental. Food is speaking to us in metaphor. If we listen, we can begin to meet our real needs.

Why Stories Work

I grew up in a multicultural household on the island of Guam, where storytelling was part of everyday life. Later, as a psychologist, I saw how powerful stories could be in helping my clients understand what they were feeling—especially when words weren’t enough.

Stories reach us in a way that facts and logic can’t. They speak to our emotions, our imaginations, and something deep in our psyche. As Carl Jung said, metaphors speak to us on three levels: mental, emotional, and imaginative—all at once.

That’s why I use metaphor and story in therapy. They help bypass resistance. They invite insight. They reach the parts of us that are longing to be seen and heard.

What Recovery Really Means

Here’s what I believe after decades of this work:

Recovery is not about fixing what’s broken.

It’s about reclaiming what’s already within you.

Real recovery is authenticity. It’s learning to trust your own inner wisdom. And it’s recognizing that your sensitivity and intuition—traits the world may have dismissed—are actually your greatest strengths.

The women I’ve worked with over the years are some of the most emotionally attuned and intuitive people I know. And when they begin to see that their struggles are not flaws but clues—messages from the deepest parts of themselves—the healing begins.

One Last Thought

If you’re struggling with food or body image, I want you to know this: there is nothing wrong with you.

You are not weak. You are not broken. You are not alone.

You may just be holding onto a log that once saved your life. And in time, with gentleness and practice, you can learn to let go and swim to shore.

You can learn the language of metaphor. You can discover what you’re really hungry for. And you can come home to yourself.

That’s what Eating in the Light of the Moon is about. That’s what my work is about. And that’s what I hope you’ll take away from our conversation.

The answers you’re looking for aren’t outside you. They’ve been with you all along.

You just need the right story to help you remember.

If you’ve ever stared at the fridge wondering, “Why can’t I just stop this?” or felt stuck in a cycle of bingeing, restricting, or hating your body—I want you to know this:

You’re not broken. You’re not weak. You’re not alone.

And here’s the truth I’ve learned over the past 35 years: Disordered eating is rarely about food itself.

The Hidden Hunger When I first started working with women struggling with food and body image, I listened deeply. There were no clear treatment paths back then, but what I began to notice was that food issues were speaking in metaphors. The hunger they described wasn’t just physical—it was emotional, spiritual, even soulful.

So if you’ve ever:

Eaten when you weren’t physically hungry

Restricted your eating even when your body needed nourishment

Felt like food cravings had control over you

…it may be your body’s way of trying to meet a deeper need.

Tank A vs. Tank B: Understanding Your True Hunger I often explain this through the metaphor of two tanks: Tank A holds physical hunger and gets filled with food. Tank B holds emotional or spiritual hunger—it’s filled with things like love, attention, connection, and meaning.

Most of us are only taught to recognize Tank A. But when Tank B is empty, we often try to fill it with food—and that never truly satisfies. When we can start to distinguish between these two tanks, healing begins.

Food as a Symbol Food can be a powerful symbol. Your cravings may actually carry messages:

Sweet foods might mean you’re longing for more sweetness or kindness in your life.

Crunchy, salty foods often signal unspoken anger or frustration.

Warm, soft foods can reflect a deep need for comfort or emotional warmth.

Chocolate frequently represents a craving for love, sensuality, or connection.

Your body speaks to you through these symbols. The key is learning how to listen.

Reclaiming the Feminine Principle Our world tends to overvalue logic, control, and productivity—what I call the masculine principle—and undervalue emotional sensitivity, intuition, and connection—the feminine principle. Disordered eating often stems from suppressing those feminine qualities, not because they are weaknesses, but because they are misunderstood strengths.

Part of recovery is learning to embrace those qualities again. To value your emotions. To trust your intuition. To listen to your body.

Recovery Is About Connection, Not Control Recovery isn’t just about eating “the right way.” It’s about reconnecting—to your body, your needs, your emotions, and yes, to the earth itself.

When we disconnect from our bodies, we often disconnect from the earth—the very source of our nourishment. That’s why I often begin groups and sessions with grounding exercises that help you reconnect to that life-giving energy beneath your feet.

Small Steps You Can Take Today:

Walk barefoot in the grass. Let the earth support you.

Sit with your body and ask, “What am I truly hungry for?”

Tune in to the physical sensations of hunger and fullness.

Gently explore the symbolic meaning of your most craved foods.

A Loving Reminder You are not too much. You are not too emotional. You are not a problem that needs fixing.

Your relationship with food holds meaning. Your body holds wisdom.

When you begin to listen—really listen—with curiosity and compassion, you begin to come home to yourself.

You don’t have to do it all at once. You can start today.

Because your healing matters. And so do you

When was the last time you gave yourself permission… to feel?

Not just the “acceptable” emotions. Not just gratitude or calm or joy.
But the ones that come in like wild waves—anger, longing, overwhelm.

In a recent podcast conversation, I was asked what my “cup of tea” is these days.
I smiled and answered, rose sorbet.

Yes, sorbet. Made from actual edible flowers I grow in my garden.

There’s something about the soft, fragrant sweetness of roses on my tongue that reminds me:
Healing doesn’t have to be hard.
Sometimes, it starts with beauty.

But healing from an eating disorder—especially bulimia or binge eating—is not just about behavior.
It’s about patterns.
It’s about unmet needs.
It’s about emotions we were never taught how to feel, much less express.

That’s what we dive into on the newest episode on Mary’s Cup of Tea Podcast.

We talk about Understanding Hidden Layers of Bulimia and Binge Eating:

The real spiritual and emotional drivers behind bulimia and binge eating

Why traditional “just eat this meal” approaches often miss the mark

How storytelling and metaphor can name what words alone can’t

What anger has to do with bingeing

And the powerful tool of assertive communication—one I believe is non-negotiable for true recovery

I also share the story of how I started my work in eating disorder recovery back in the early 1980s—long before “eating disorders” were even widely recognized.

Back then, I had to listen.
To stories.
To silence.
To the invisible patterns between the lines.

I listened to girls and women of all shapes and sizes, all backgrounds and ages.
Some had trauma. Some didn’t.
But they all had one thing in common:

They were sensitive. Deep-feeling. Highly intuitive.
And they had no idea how to navigate the world with that kind of sensitivity.
So they turned it inward.

If any of this resonates with you… if you’ve ever felt “too much” or “not enough”…
Or if you’ve struggled to put your own story into words…

I invite you to listen to this conversation.
We go there—gently, honestly, and with a deep reverence for what it means to heal.

Let this be a reminder:
You are not broken.
You are not alone.
And you were never meant to heal in isolation.

With moonlight and metaphor,
Dr. Anita

If you’ve ever struggled with food, body image, or understanding your cravings, I invite you to join me for a powerful conversation on Boulder Nutrition Radio with host Sue Van Rees. In this episode, we explore the transformative power of myth, metaphor, and storytelling—tools that have been used for centuries to bring meaning, insight, and healing.

I share how our brains are wired for stories, why they resonate so deeply, and how they can help us decode the hidden messages behind our struggles with food. Together, Sue and I discuss the symbolism of cravings, the emotional wisdom beneath our eating patterns, and how storytelling can reconnect us to our authentic selves.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re drowning in your struggles, unsure of how to let go, or stuck in a cycle of self-judgment, I want you to know—there is another way. Healing isn’t about willpower or control. It’s about understanding the deeper hungers in your life, listening to your body’s wisdom, and finding compassion for yourself in the process.

This episode is an invitation to look at your relationship with food in a way you may have never considered before. I hope you’ll tune in—you may just discover the story that changes everything.

In this episode of The Inner Space Project podcast, Dr. Patti Ashley welcomes Dr. Anita Johnston, a clinical psychologist, eating disorder specialist, and author of the bestselling book Eating in the Light of the Moon. Together, they dive into the complexities of disordered eating and recovery, exploring the tension between our innate drives for connection and authenticity. Dr. Johnston shares her profound insights on how early life patterns influence our relationships with food and body image, often creating a gap filled by disordered behaviors.

Listeners will learn about the transformative power of storytelling and metaphor in healing, as well as the vital balance between the masculine (logical, goal-oriented) and feminine (emotional, intuitive) principles in recovery. Dr. Johnston emphasizes that complete recovery is possible, offering tools like curiosity to navigate inner struggles and reclaim authenticity while connecting with others.

This episode also introduces the wealth of resources available through Dr. Johnston’s Light of the Moon Cafe, including free gifts, self-study courses, and interactive workshops. A must-listen for anyone seeking to better understand the intersection of psychology, eating disorders, and personal growth.

Recovery from body image issues or eating disorders isn’t a simple, straight line. Often, it’s like clinging to a log in a raging river: you’re barely staying afloat, but you’re also afraid to let go. This is where stories and metaphors can step in and make a profound difference.

Authenticity: Embracing the Struggle

Storytelling is a powerful healing tool, allowing us to make sense of our complex feelings and experiences. Stories can reveal our struggles from new perspectives, helping us feel more capable of tackling recovery, one step at a time. In Eating in the Light of the Moon, Dr. Anita Johnston introduces the metaphor of “the log in the river” to illustrate how our coping mechanisms – like disordered eating – can keep us afloat during difficult times. Yet, as we begin to recover, these same mechanisms may hold us back. Letting go is scary, but it’s essential if we want to reach the shore.

Empowerment: You Have the Power to Rewrite Your Story

Healing from an eating disorder is about creating a story that’s uniquely yours. Dr. Johnston emphasizes that stories give you the freedom to define your own journey. When you listen to or read a story that resonates, your brain connects with it on a deep level, and that connection can empower you. Imagine using stories as guideposts on your path – maybe it’s a tale of overcoming fear, or a metaphor about finding light in darkness. Whatever speaks to you, let it fuel your journey.

Relatability: Everyone Starts Somewhere

Everyone’s journey with eating disorders or body image issues starts somewhere, and that’s perfectly okay. The recovery process isn’t about looking perfect or doing it “right”; it’s about showing up for yourself, even when it’s hard. Dr. Johnston’s work with metaphor and storytelling reminds us that each of us has a unique path and unique needs on this journey to healing.

Encouragement to Embrace the Process

Recovery is a process that takes patience and persistence. Like treading water, you don’t let go of the log in one giant leap – you start by swimming small laps around it. Each attempt brings you closer to freedom. And with each small victory, you’re building strength, even if it doesn’t feel like it right away.

Inclusivity: Healing is Possible for Everyone

No matter how long you’ve been struggling, healing is possible. Dr. Johnston’s storytelling approach reconnects us with a sense of belonging and hope. You’re not alone on this journey. Stories remind us that others have faced their own battles and found ways to overcome them, and you can too.

Moving Forward with Stories of Strength

Recovery is about rewriting your story, day by day. Embrace the metaphors, stories, and symbols that resonate with you, letting them guide you through the river, away from the log, and toward the shore. Healing is deeply personal, but it’s a journey you are fully capable of navigating. Let the power of storytelling be your compass toward a fuller, more compassionate life.
